Get Lost in a Literary Adventure

February 14th, 2011 by Staff

High Hampton Inn has a rich history that could fill pages and pages of a novel, so it’s no surprise to learn that family-friendly mountain inn has inspired several books and is considered part of  North Carolina’s Literary Trails.  High Hampton Inn is located just steps from the Southern Mountain Trails that traverse Sylva, Dillsboro, Cullowhee, and the Highlands / Cashiers area.

A birthplace of legends and tall tales, and a popular location for Hollywood storytellers, the massive Rhododendron thickets and the cold rushing streams of the area have long stirred local poets to create passionate portraits of local people and landscapes.  Writers with a connection to this area include: Mary Adams, William Bartram, Sallie Bissell, Rick Boyer, Kathryn Stripling Byer, Sean Bridgers, Sue Ellen Bridgers, Gary Carden, Catherine Carter, Thomas Meyer, John Parris, Collin Wilcox Paxton, Walker Percy, Dannye Romine Powell, Thomas Rain Crowe, Ron Rash and Jonathan Williams.

High Hampton Inn’s stunning scenery of lush green forests and mountain peaks is enough to inspire anyone to pen their own story. The peaceful ambiance and the relaxing sounds of nature create the perfect writing atmosphere. It is also a place for famous authors to escape.

Winston Groom, author of Forrest Gump, has spent countless days at High Hampton Inn, enjoying the peace and quiet.  In fact, during the height of the movie’s success, he came to the resort to escape the ensuing whirlwind of media activity. Rumors began to circulate among guests that Groom was on property, and guests were always trying to find him.  In a case of happily mistaken identity, guests always mistook someone else for the author, and he was able to watch in amusement from afar, chuckling.  Read about his adventures at High Hampton here.

With no televisions or telephones in the guestrooms as distractions, we invite you to take your own literary journey. Tuck into one of cozy chairs in front of an inviting fire and take the time to dive into that book you’ve been wanting to read!
